Black And White Image Of A Northumbrian Weekend In Summer With An IPhone 4

It’s our first outing in the camper van this year and excitement is on a high. After 3 minutes of discussion we decide to go to Seahouses in Northumberland as we know a good camp site there. It’s central to all those lovely places we like to visit and relax in the warmth of an English summer.

Two new van batteries later we set off and two hours later we arrive and book in for the weekend. Bottle of wine in hand we walk the 50 yards to the beach to enjoy the sunset on the beach, one sip later we have to rush back to the van shivering with cold, no worries it will be lovely tomorrow, we’ll have breakfast on the beach.

Well, we awoke at 7am to what can only be described as winter! A cold shower and hot cuppa, to warm me up, later, I take one look at Pat and say “Breakfast on the beach is cancelled it’s too cold, never mind it could be worse it could be raining”.

You know how sometimes you should kept you thoughts to yourself and your mouth shut, well that was definitely one of those occasions, as no sooner had I said it, it started raining and from that moment on I thought I was in a dream, dreaming we were in a hurricane that lasted all weekend. Problem was I never woke up!

I took this image on my iPhone 4 and just thought it summed up the whole summer weekend away in Northumberland.

My Thoughts On Using An IPhone 4 Camera To Take Portraits

First things first, i thought i would tell you the story of the image.

My mum is having a good day today, talking about sweets and her bowels, as she has not been to the toilet today again and with nothing else to think about suddenly this is a major problem. Her mission for the rest of the day is to go to the toilet.

Note to self, need to get her some sweets.
Today she is talking about my grandad, she is back in a world that is confotable for her. When he worked in the pit at Bruntcliffe Morley, he worked on the coal face, “you know he was the strongest man around” she says proudly.

“Did you know that your granddad used to wear second hand police boots and he never wore socks, he used to walk 5 miles to the pit and then 5 back every day, he was so strong and muscly”.

“I remember once he chased two coppers with his shotgun after they were taking the mick out of him when he was drunk and as he went round the corner at Jawit Place in Morley he shot his gun in the air, just as the lamp lighter was lighting the gas lamp at the end of the street…. he shit himself!” “who did?” I asked, “the lamplighter” she said and laughed..

Onto the iPhone 4 camera.

In my opinion if the light is right, then you can take a reasonably good image from a quality point of view, regarding content well i’ll leave that to you as to weather you like the content.

Fine Art Black and white silver gelatin open edition print of “view of Teesport Teesside”

Whilst on a visit to Teesport Teeside to view the ship Mpi Resolution, I went aboard and was shown around. I went to the top deck of the ship and saw someone and asked if I could go outside to have a look. Well, what a sight, there it was, Teesport in all it’s glory! So out come my Leica M9 and I elected to use my 25mm f2.8 carl zeiss lens, what an opportunity.

Black and white silver gelatin limited edition print. Limited to 10 only of “Garrucha Fish Market in Andalucia”

I visited the fish market in Garrucha Andalucia on a weeks holiday to Spain and found it fascinating mainly because it was open to the public, I was able to walk around with free will.

Garrucha is a fishing port in Andalucia and at the time of my visit was filled with Tuna. inspired i took out my trusty 1954 twin lens Rollie and took this shot whilst the auction was taking place. Film was Ilford Delta 400 ISO

Black and white silver gelatin limited edition print. Limited to 10 only of “Times Gone By”

I spent what turned out to be the last Christmas with my mum in her own home, which was Christmas Eve 2009. I call this image “Times Gone By” as she would drift into her own world, a world of past memories and childhood. In the present it’s a cruel disease called dementia. Mum was enjoying a glass of advocaat. The only light I had to work with was a 60 watt bulb in the ceiling which adds to the power of this image.

Taken on a 1954 Leica M3 with a 50 mm F2 lens
